Moving after BCT in the Army?

My husband is in OSUT at Fort Knox, KY right now and he will be getting out around the end of July. I was curious about how long do soldiers who graduate usually get to come back home, before they are needed at their new location. Also I was wondering, since we wanted to live off base, cuz I will be moving down with him, should we have an apartment ready before we move down? Or should we wait and just show up at the base and request permission to live off base? Any personal experiences or stories about this topic would be appreciated, thank you!!
