From what I remember he was not the most popular guy in terms of Australia's affection for him...but he was regarded as a pretty solid leader...many thought of him as quite pompous and overbearing, which is what eventually brought him undone. He, like many conservative leaders (and the last two Labor PMs) did not have the common touch. In fact, I don't think we've had a PM like that since Hawke. Australians really do seem to like leaders they feel they could have a beer with.
