Why did Roman leaders treat Christians harshly?

When you, the powerful, hear that a small group of illiterate Galileans in the province of Judea claim to get power in life through eating flesh and drinking blood and do not do the research to understand this is symbolic then you tend to punish the 'cannibals'.
